Packaging machinery decisions are often made backwards β a supplier's standard machine is bought, and the product is squeezed to fit it. Done properly, the process starts with your product and format, and works outward to the machine specification. This guide covers the questions worth answering before you request a quote.
1. Define Your Product and Format First
Powder, granule, liquid, viscous paste and solid/snack products all behave completely differently in a filling head, and each has a natural packaging format (sachet, stand-up pouch, bottle, jar, carton). Before evaluating machines, document:
- Product form (free-flowing powder, sticky paste, viscous liquid, particulate solid)
- Target pack format and size range β and whether you need one format or several
- Fill weight/volume accuracy required, and any regulatory net-content tolerance
- Shelf-life and barrier requirements (does the pack need to be airtight, light-proof, tamper-evident?)
2. Throughput vs. Format Flexibility β Pick One Priority
High-speed dedicated lines (a single format, run continuously) achieve the lowest cost per unit but are expensive to reconfigure. Flexible multi-format lines cost more per unit of output but let you run multiple SKUs on one line with a changeover. Contract packers and multi-brand operations usually need flexibility; single-product manufacturers at scale usually want dedicated speed.
If you expect to run more than 3β4 distinct pack formats through the same line in a typical month, prioritise fast changeover capability over raw top-line speed.
3. Manual, Semi-Automatic, or Fully Automatic?
The right automation level depends on labour cost and availability, target output, and how much variability a manual step introduces into your specific product. A semi-automatic capping or labelling step run by a trained operator can be perfectly reliable at moderate volumes; it becomes the bottleneck once you scale past a certain throughput or run multiple shifts with rotating staff.
4. Think About the Whole Line, Not Just One Machine
A filling machine that runs faster than your downstream sealing or labelling station just creates a bottleneck further down the line. Map your target line speed end-to-end β primary fill, seal, label/code, and secondary/end-of-line packing (case packing, palletising) β and size every station to the same target rate, not just the headline machine.
This is also where integration matters: conveyor spacing, infeed/outfeed compatibility, and control system communication between machines from different suppliers can create hidden commissioning costs if not planned upfront.
5. Materials Compatibility
Confirm the machine is validated for your actual packaging film, bottle material or closure type β not a similar-sounding generic spec. Heat-seal temperature and dwell time, for example, need to match your specific laminate structure, and getting this wrong shows up as inconsistent seals that only fail intermittently, which is much harder to diagnose after installation than to specify correctly up front.
6. Changeover Parts and After-Sales Support
Format-specific change parts (filling nozzles, sealing jaws, bottle-neck star wheels) are often the fastest-wearing components on a packaging line and the ones most likely to need reordering. 7. Get an Itemised, Comparable Quote
A useful proposal separates machine ex-works cost, change-part sets included, integration/conveyor work, installation and commissioning, and operator training. This makes it possible to compare suppliers on the same basis rather than comparing bundled headline numbers that hide different scopes of supply.
